In what looks like a desperate bid to win over the mostly white population of voters in Iowa, Rick Santorum revived the old Republican tactic of attacking the African-American community.
While doing some last minute campaigning, Santorum declared that he doesn’t want to help blacks because he thinks they rely too much on welfare which includes Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, food stamps, and unemployment benefits.
”I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them other people’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn their money and provide for themselves and their families. The best way to do that is to get the manufacturing sector of the economy rolling.”

Since President Obama won the Presidency, Republicans have made every effort to paint him as an un-American outsider. Republicans don't want African-Americans to have the ability to provide for themselves. They just want to take everything else away from them too.
I'm truly puzzled as to why he singles out Black Folk, when in fact we are not the largest recipients of welfare. Perhaps, because that's a lie that's been fostered over time.

We think Rick Santorum is just plain ignorant and fearful. He background and maybe his religion taught him this fear. Unbeleivable!
I tellya, he, as well as other GOP/Tea Party folk live in the 1950's...Diversity they just don't
get.
Diversity is the key to success in any culture, and in America, Diversity, is what makes America great.
Good seed, easyjj

Easy, it's because you can't do math. Black folk are receiving several multiples of their representation in the entire population.
39.7 percent of AFDC clients are Black single mothers and 38.1 percent are White women with children.
So 39.7% of recipients are black single mothers when they are at the most less than 6% of the population. That's the solution to your puzzlement. That's why they are singled out. Black folk ARE the largest recipient of this entitlement., by far.

I read the entire article. I quoted from it. I must add it was very poorly written, full of grammatical errors and foolishly misleading in the way it presented statistics. Why didn't you catch that?
Why would you quote from a poorly written, foolishly misleading, and full of grammatical errors article?

Your objective with this off topic remark was what? Or have you forgotten perfection is in the Cemetery.

Easy, why are you picking on me?
How can a comment from the seeder's posted site be off topic? I accepted the statistics in your post but not your interpretation. This is why we have such strife.
I'm sick of these guys targeting the Black Community or other minorities for their campaigning strategies. They need to knock it off. If they are so smart why are more programs to teach living skills, work ethic and resources for childcare and transportation for poor workers? Create some jobs why don't they and stop simply maligning without real solutions?

Because it's cheap and they know nothing else to do while boosting their egos and hoping the ultra-rich won't kick them to the curb after the dirty work is done.

The narrow-minded bigotry astounds me. Santorum is playing to the way-to-the-right-rabid-whacko crowd for sure!
- 7 votes
It's very disconcerting, and upsetting to listen to a man who would be president using a section of the population as fodder for his bull@!$%# politics. Further, I read somewhere that he said that in an effort to play to the crowd. Just more bull@!$%#, that's who he is.

It certainly is BS and it seems he's great at this. One more insincere candidate for presidency. I don't think any of them ever sit down and think about how other's perceive them. They've decided they can say anything and look great but that's changing rapidly. Some of my radical right wig acquaintances and friends are even getting frowny faces. I see this as an improvement however from their "all hail the right wingers".
- 6 votes
Well, they are playing to the extreme right, right now. I don't think they think ahead about how the general public will perceive them. Maybe they don't care.
Thing is, and here we go again....the most religious of them seem to be the most callous.
The guy is beginning to creep me out with all his sodomy BS.

He's an imbecile, his tactic is when talking to a group of white people, blame blacks and they will stand and applaud and when talking to a group of black people, blame white people and they will stand and applaud. His problem is he isn't/hasn't spoken to a group of black people. Good luck.
This guy doesn't stand a chance.

Not in a general, for sure. But with the rabid right evangelicals, he is just their cup of tea.

The problem is that Republicans have been encouraging the outsourcing of manufacturing jobs for decades now, and have no interest in bringing industries back to America unless workers agree to be paid less than slave laborers in third world countries. Republicans are also responsible for the unemployment rate among African-Americans, which is higher than the overall rate. In fact, Republicans haven’t lifted a finger to aid the black community for a very long time, and given the overt racism in the party and among the candidates, it’s unlikely they would do so now.
What a bunch of racist poverty pimp garbage

This is just the kind of rubbish you have to watch out for from candidates... you never, ever rubbish sections of citizens in this way. No future President with any vision would come out with such crap, or marginalise sections of it's citizens - just goes to show that he is not the right person to pull the US together - instead is just a harbinger of more racism and prejudice that you guys in the US could really do without. If you believe in America, then surely you believe in ALL the citizens. That is the kind of President that you really need - and I am not sure if the GOP have really got one with the X factor... that is the problem.

A jackass. Plain and simple. And it says more about the person who would actually vote for him than anything else.
- 2 votes
blaqberry....You are being too kind with "Jackass". And because of that remark the numbers voting for him will be staggering.
When he made the statement in the Video a round of applause greeted him. I wonder what that was all about?

I'm not sure. I never took Iowa to be a hotbed of racial tension. Perhaps I was wrong. In any event, But the fact that the Iowa Caucuses are though to set the pace for Presidential Primaries to me speaks volumes about the state of America as a whole. If this is an indicator of what is to be expected, I am very sad - although I can't really say I'm surprised.

I spent two weeks out there in 2006 doing some consulting work, and the folks were very cordial everywhere I went. I believe because of my experiences in the State, and the applause Santorum got for his BS remarks was sort of surprising to me.

I think it speaks volumes about the ineptness of the republican candidates who would be King.
blaq....I've said this on several occasions that this will be one of the ugliest Presidential race in recent memory. More specifically when it begins to come down to the "wire"

From the article:
Social Security is the nation's largest welfare program, although many Whites prefer to call it a retirement plan.
I'm speechless. Easy, at your age, I'm certain you receive SS. Is it welfare or is it a retirement program to which you contributed?
I call it a retirement program.
Social Insecurity is the biggest ripoff mandated on the American people ever. When you do the numbers the return on your money stinks.
Well, it seems that Santorum is a serious Presidential runner then for the GOP, as per the results that came in today. He now needs to clarify his stance on the issue posted here in the article. Make himself clear on where his thinking is going on this. Time will tell - I am going to give him the benefit at this early stage that he will re-issue a statement and stop-up his mouth in the future before he engages his brain. There is also the issue of separating Church from Politics - I am not sure if he would be able to resist muddying the waters here when it comes to Govermment policies, and the decision-making process thereof. Prayer meetings inside election campaigning, aka Rick Perry, err... not appropriate, IMO. Hoping Santorum will separate the two into their appropriate places....

If you were to stand before God you would tell him there is a time you do not pray ?
There is a time and place to pray, Wildwonderful... and I am all for that. Just don't think it is appropriate in politcal debates and campaigning. God is not on the side of any particular political party, and he is certainly not going to assist in the campaigning shananigans of any particular incumbent... IMO.

If you were to stand before God ? Would you tell him there is a time not to pray ? Did you ever consider if both parties would get down on their knees and take our countries issues before God things might change ?
Wildwonderfull... What countries' issues?... oh, you mean the economic ones... where our Governments spend and waste so much money that they have dug a hole they cannot find a way out of... I think God would probably turn round and say - "so what do you want me to do about it"..
When you look around the World, and the misery and the strife in the Third World, the fight and loss of life just to get basic human rights in the Middle East, the sick, dying, starving.. do you think God might be better employed at places where he is really needed... Political rallies might kinda be a bit low on His list of priorities.... might be a bit selfish of us to call him away to deal with our "miseries"...

Our countries is in a free fall of moral decline. This moral decline is causing our country tremendous economic issues.
This moral decline is causing our country tremendous economic issues.
I don't know that such a general statement can be associated with the economic decline. I would think it had to do with bad decisions from the powers that be.
Do you think the landslide of illegitimate children are not costing our government billions upon billions ? Do you not think the breakdown of the nuclear family is creating a financial disaster for our country?
Have any idea how much Octomom has extorted from the taxpayers ?
Have any idea how much Octomom has extorted from the taxpayers ?
Octomom.....My goodness.
What about 9-10 years of 8-10 $Billion a month(or more) for two uncalled for, and unpaid for wars.
We are getting off topic so let's call an end to this discussion.

With all due respect you brought up the war issue not me. My statement of moral decline causing tremendous economic issues you challenged. I cited Octomom as an example that I felt you would be able to identify with. My opinion she should have been charged with extortion and then made serve time in prison for her crimes.

That's my point exactly. What has Octomom or two unfunded wars to do with this.
Rick Santorum Says He's Not Interested In Helping African-Americans
Please go listen to the video
I listened to it about twenty times, and twenty times he said Black Folks. No matter how on the next day he tries to clean it up after creating such a "@!$%# Storm".
Wildwonderful - I would like to debate with you more on this on another more appropriate seed, with respect. Easyjjgrand is right - we will be off-topic. Religious and moral issues get too easily mixed up into political debates - and this is my point at how difficult it can get when trying to deal with two parallels.
Getting back to the subject matter - I heard that there are some doubts as to Santorum's campaign strategy, lacking seemingly padding on a whole variety of issues. He would need, it seems, to clarify his thinking. I can't see him making any headway if he can't bring the citizens, from all walks of life, into the Big Picture of his plans for the US and how all are going to be included in any economic plans. If there is a hint he intends to persecute (is that too strong a word??) some minority groups - this is not a good sign against fragmentation of a Society. Do you not need a potential President that can pull everything together?.. and who is that guy going to be?
Well the President we have now is the most divisive we have had in my life time. We are borrowing 40 cents for every dollar we spend and that has to be brought under control.
He's nothing like as divisive as those who would stop him from doing anything, including things his opponents once supported, solely because he's a] black and/or b] a Democrat. Other presidents have polarized the country at least as badly - Nixon and Clinton come to mind - but they didn't inspire the total meltdown of reason, compromise and courtesy which has destroyed the GOP and killed true, civil conservatism in the past three years in favor of histrionic stereotyping, demonizing and laying of blame & guilt upon everyone other than themselves. They are divided among themselves, forming a multi-headed hydra engaged in agitprop and physical assault, largely in the name of restrictive and narrow-minded religious beliefs, (Sounds a lot like al-Quaeda.) Their attacks are frequently against each other as much as their "common enemy," the "Muslim, foreign-born" President. They demand compliance and respect, but earn neither, gaining the former only through initmidation and lies, and the latter not at all.
Obama brings with him a lot of socialist "ideals" seemingly. Nothing wrong with that... but in these economic times, unfortunately, it may have left him as the wrong President for the current times!! This is someone who's ideals costs a country a lot of money - but that needs to be counteracted with policies on how to make the stuff to support his policies, surely. The GOP do not support him, either - infact, seemingly, will do anything to destroy his Presidency. This is not a good place for the US to find themselves - a devisive Government is never going to put a country or its citizens in the primary position....
Your next potential President will need a good majority in Congress - whether Dem or Rep. Even if Obama remains in power - can he take Congress to that level?? Bottom line. And, even if you intend to back Obama, are you convinced he has got the politicies to create the wealth?
Personally, I believe he has the ability, however, to pull the country's citizens more together. The GOP may see a more devisive country, especially where minorities are concerned, IMO.
